I've said it to a couple others - he's The Healer. Personally I think he gets a little cranky whe humans abuse his field. Not generally enough to directly intervene but enough that he's irked when he sees it. (Similarly, Logan has a habit of taking care of children, who at least in theory are Raphael's to protect.)

I think Logan would be able to sense his when he's being hidden, just a faint scent of "other". Animals can sense thwn but we do't know how.

And mutants wouldn't be the first offshoot of humans he's seen (there have been a few others found in the fossil record).
